Assistant Controller

Position Location: Dallas

Reports to: Controller

The Retail Connection is seeking a candidate for the position of Assistant Controller in its Accounting Department. The potential candidate would report to the Controller and be responsible for overseeing the general accounting function that includes the company’s corporate accounting, property accounting for both owned properties/third-party owners, and brokerage/lease commission accounting.

Main Objectives

  • Responsible for month-end closeouts, year-end closeouts, and balance sheet management
  • Will have direct management responsibility for accounting team and will provide leadership and accounting oversight to Senior Accountants, Staff Accountants, and Accounting Associates
  • Coordinate, review and oversee Property Accounting for all TRC owned properties and third-party owned
  • The key leadership role that interfaces with all divisions of the organization. Strong communication skills required and teamwork between accounting and property management divisions. The role will also interface with the brokerage, development, and acquisition divisions
  • Ensures that company financial records, under responsibility, are maintained in compliance with company policies (income tax basis) for owned properties and third-party owners’ requirements
  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining a system of internal controls that will ensure the company’s assets are adequately safeguarded
  • Coordinates work relating to external audits in the periodic review of property financial statements
  • Ensures that the accounting system software continues to operate as required. Involved in validating/designing suggested changes to ensure accounting requirements continue to be met
  • Provide technical accounting guidance and support to all company entities. At times, this may include involvement in due diligence and other activities surrounding acquisitions/dispositions
  • Ensures that the accounting department is staffed with qualified financial personnel capable of meeting the objectives and responsibilities, noted above
  • Special projects as assigned

Education | Experience | Skills

  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting plus CPA certification with strong accounting experience in real estate preferably with a real estate developer or real estate owner/operator
  • Master’s degree in Accounting; CPA or CPA Candidate; with strong leadership and management skillset
  • 10 – 15 years of private industry accounting experience (some public accounting a plus) with significant real estate experience preferably with a real estate developer or real estate owner/operator
  • Strong leadership skills and written and verbal communication skills
  • MRI Software preferred, Yardi Software helpful
  • Ability to analyze financial data; prepare financial reports/statements and compile projections
  • Demonstrated ability to form, lead and develop high-performing teams
  • Ability to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including both written and verbal communication and customer service focus
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments including operational and property management teams
