Fast first-year growth for the Retail Connection

September 9th, 2004 - Sandra Zaragoza Dallas-based The Retail Connection recently celebrated an open house and anniversary at its headquarters at 2525 McKinnon St. with several hundred guests, many of whom are clients that assisted the company’s exponential growth this year. Steve Lieberman, CEO of The Retail Connection, founded the company a year ago alongside president and COO Alan Shor, who came on board from the merchant side as former COO of Irving-based Zales Corp., the nation’s largest specialty jewelry retailer. Since then the company, which is a retail focused real estate services and investment firm, has grown from five to 25 professionals and 10 support staff. According to Lieberman, the company’s tenant client roster has grown to more than 80 high-profile retailers and restaurants chains including Gap, Bed Bath & Beyond, The Sports Authority, Office Max, JoAnn’s, Famous Footwear and Houston’s. In addition, the company now represents leasing for more than 5 million square feet of existing and proposed shopping center developments for third party owners and developers. “Our geographic reach has no limits, and we are already involved in a number of national tenant rep assignments such as Golfsmith Superstores,” says Lieberman, who spent 15 years with Dallas-based Weitzman Group, before launching the company. “We intend to expand our reach responsibility. We want to make certain that as we expand, we continue to deliver the same level of performance that we deliver here.” The Retail Connection recently expanded into Central Texas with an office San Antonio led by Sherman Hinkebein and has plans to open offices in Houston and Austin. “We have and will continue to add capabilities as we grow to make sure that we can help our clients resolve the expanded needs that they may have.” Some of The Retail Connections’ added capabilities include: Connected Development Services, a tenant-driven development branch led by David Wilson, president; Connected Acquisition Services, which aids buyers in the acquisition of single-tenant assts to shopping centers. Michael Ablon is president of the group, which recently closed on the Village on The Parkway shopping center in Addison. Shor also guides Connected Capital, The Retail Connections’ merchant banking group, which arranges financing, operations and strategic planning for local and national retailers.
