Dallas Execs Launch New Retail RE Firm

January 19th, 2004 - By Jennifer D. Duell, senior editor The former COO of Zale Corp. and former president of The Weitzman Group teamed up to establish a new real estate services and investment firm focused exclusively on retail and retailers. Alan Shor and Steven Lieberman are co-chairmen of The Retail Connection Inc., which will be headquartered in Dallas. "We see a tremendous opportunity for a full-service firm that understands retail real estate and retailers' needs," said CEO Lieberman. He hopes to provide advisory services that go a step beyond real estate to strategy and operations. The Retail Connection offers a platform of services including brokerage, advisory and investment services. The brokerage services division provides strategic planning, tenant representation, project leasing, general brokerage and national advisory services. Investment services provides acquisition and development support for these real estate programs, and merchant banking assists entrepreneurial retail and restaurant chains with expertise and sources of capital. Shor, who also serves as president, pointed out that his experience at Zale Corp. gave him insight into what retailers really want from their real estate providers. "I sat on the other side of the table, and I understand what they're looking for." The firm, which is still in the midst of setting up shop near The Crescent in Dallas, will specialize in the Texas and Southwest retail markets. It already has more than 20 professionals, and Lieberman expects to add another 15 professionals in the future in addition to opening offices in Houston and Central Texas. "Our biggest challenge is making sure that we build the firm with logic and discipline," said Shor, who serves as president. "We want to take it one step at a time and be thoughtful and strategic." Liberman, an 18-year retail real estate veteran, brought with him from Weitzman several clients including Bed Bath & Beyond, The Sports Authority and The Gap. Since then, the firm has added several new clients such as JoAnn's.
