The CEO of a prominent Dallas retail real estate firm was given the Dallas-Fort Worth area's highest commercial property sector recognition on Thursday.

Steven Lieberman, CEO and co-chairman of the Retail Connection, received the Stemmons Service Award from the North Texas Commercial Association of Realtors and Real Estate Professionals.

The award has been given annually since 1976, and the list of past winners reads like a who's who in the North Texas property brokerage and development business.

In 2003, Lieberman was one of the founders of the Retail Connection – a retail property services and investment firm in Dallas' Uptown neighborhood. Before starting his own firm, Lieberman worked as an officer at Weitzman Group and Henry S. Miller Co.

"Not only is he a respected and extremely successful real estate broker and leader, he applies that same passion to his personal life," said Phil Baker, the 2008 recipient of the Stemmons Service Award. "He has given selflessly to a number of Dallas charitable organizations, where his efforts are making a true difference."

Lieberman was selected out of a field of 25 people nominated by the industry.

Other finalists were Dave Anderson of CB Richard Ellis, Riis Christensen of Transwestern and Jack "Buddy" Tompkins of GVA Cawley Realty Services.

The North Texas commercial real estate group's Young Citizen award was given to Ben Appleby, a leasing agent for Duke Realty.

The Stemmons award is named for the Dallas family that developed much of the Interstate 35E corridor and the Trinity Industrial District
